SUMMARY:India|EMBO Symposium – Human microbiome: Resistance and disease
DESCRIPTION:The importance of Human Microbiome research is rapidly gaining momentum for understanding its role in human health and disease. This requires specialized training in efficient statistical and computational algorithms to analyse the big data generated from high-throughput sequencing platforms and provide valid inferences. The field of microbiome research has witnessed an upsurge of various statistical and bioinformatics methods and softwares without adequate manpower trained in proper usage of such tools. Thus\, microbiome studies run the danger of identifying spurious associations in patient cohorts with little biological implications for prediction\, prognostication and therapy. The present India|EMBO Symposium\, organised by Karen Nelson\, Indresh Singh\, Harinder Singh from JCVI and Souvik Mukherjee and Partha P Majumder from NIBMG\, will cover topics related to recent advancements in human microbiome sequencing\, antimicrobial resistance\, clinical metagenomics\, model based analysis of human microbiome\, metatranscriptomics and metaproteomics approaches. This India|EMBO Symposium will also include a satellite workshop on metagenomic data analysis and visualization. The present symposium is a timely step in addressing these relevant topics which will help in the development of a multi-dimensional host-microbiome research environment in India.

SUMMARY:Exploring Human Host-Microbiome Interactions in Health and Disease
DESCRIPTION:The 8th Exploring Human Host-Microbiome Interactions in Health and Disease meeting will once again bring together leading scientists and clinicians from the fields of microbiology\, gastroenterology\, neuroscience\, cancer and public health to discuss the latest developments in this fast-moving area. \nRecent studies have revealed the complexity of the gut microbial ecology and its network connectivity to the metabolic regulation of important pathways in the host. Studies on microbiota from various body sites are helping us to understand how microorganisms affect the host. Alterations in microbiome composition have been associated with many non-infectious diseases including inflammatory bowel conditions\, autoimmune diseases\, cancers and diabetes\, although in many cases causality has yet to be established. \nThis meeting will update current knowledge of how various microbiomes (skin\, oral\, gut\, lung\, non-bacterial etc.) communicate with the host and the factors that influence these interactions. The programme will feature new developments enabled by metagenomics\, metabonomics and other technologies. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in discussions on how to apply recent discoveries to disease processes\, health restoration and maintenance. \nThis year’s meeting will also include sessions on the effects of the microbiome on cancer and how the immune system influences the microbiome and vice versa. As in previous years\, the warm welcome given to students and the open friendly atmosphere provide attendees with an enjoyable conference.
